WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF BLOCKED DRAINS?

Blockages in your Plumbing can arise from a variety of causes. However, the main root of these causes is neglecting to clean your drain regularly.

A clogged plumbing system can result from neglecting a drain for months.

Blocked drains are usually the result of the following reasons:

  • Small Foreign Objects. Small objects like jewellery, soap, or other residue can significantly block your drain. Small children might be prone to flushing random objects down the drain, causing similar problems. Toilets and sinks are unsuitable ways to dispose of waste and other small objects.
  • Toiletries. It’s important to avoid flushing toiletries such as nappies and baby wipes as much as possible. Paper napkins or toilet paper tend to get swollen when they absorb water, causing them to clog drains when a significant buildup accumulates.
  • Grease. Greasy and fatty substances like cooking oil or fatty foods can become problematic when they build up in your Plumbing. Due to their nature, grease and fat stick to the pipes’ insides and eventually cause a massive buildup that can block your drainage system.
  • Food Waste. Some people throw their leftovers down the sink instead of using a garbage disposal unit or segregating residual trash. Leftover food can clog sink pipes, which cannot handle large particles.
  • Hair. While working in the kitchen, it’s important to remember that hair can fall and accumulate in your drainage system over time. That’s why employees working in the food industry must wear hairnets to prevent hair from getting into unwanted places. Large clumps of accumulated hair can eventually cause your drain to get clogged, so it’s best to clean your pipes regularly to avoid this.

These reasons outline why cleaning your drain from time to time is essential.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Manufacturers typically set water heaters at 50 degrees Celsius, which is suitable for most households. You can adjust the thermostat for older models by setting it to medium. Gas hot water models usually have a dial on the gas valve, while electric models often have concealed thermostats behind side panels.

The water heater temperature can be adjusted to meet your needs and minimize bacterial growth. Please consult a plumbing professional for recommended temperatures.

Note: Before maintenance, switch off the water heater's electricity to avoid potential electric shock from exposed wires.

  • Rumbling sounds from a water heater often indicate sediment buildup at the bottom. This buildup can cause water to become trapped and eventually boil, leading to those unsettling rumbling sounds.

The water heater is not working well because of sediment buildup, stopping the heat from transferring to the tank's water. Try draining the tank from the bottom by attaching a drain hose to the bottom valve and letting it drain for about five minutes.

Many newer water heaters have a feature that prevents sediment buildup. If your heater is old and the buildup is severe, it might be cost-effective to replace it.

Contact Wide Plumbing to ensure the reliability of your water heater with ongoing maintenance checks.

Warning: Hot water is dangerous. You must discharge it into a floor drain, laundry tub, or bathtub. Under no circumstances should you allow the hot water to run on your lawn, as it will kill your grass and could crack a toilet bowl if discharged into the toilet. Turning off the power to the water heater before draining is imperative.

  • If left undisturbed, the tree roots can obstruct pipes with multiple root branches at entry points.

Once roots infiltrate the pipe, they rapidly become obstructed with toilet paper, grease, and other waste flowing from your home to the main sewer.

This situation leads to reduced flow, slow-running drains, and, in most cases, a complete blockage. The roots continue to grow and expand, exerting considerable pressure at the crack or joint in the pipe.

This increased pressure often causes the pipe to break, leading to total collapse and requiring repair or replacement. Root intrusion can have severe consequences, so it is crucial to address the issue promptly. Some pipe materials are more prone to root intrusion than others.

It's important to note that not all pipes are equally susceptible to root intrusion. Clay tile pipes, for instance, are more prone to penetration and damage by tree roots.

Conversely, while not immune, concrete and PVC pipes may allow root intrusion to a lesser extent than clay pipes. PVC pipes typically have fewer joints and are less likely to leak due to settlement around the pipe.

With its advanced inline drain cameras and expert team, Wide Plumbing can effectively diagnose and document drain issues caused by roots, providing reliable solutions. You can trust Wide Plumbing to handle all your needs at your home or business with care and precision.

  • Poor mounting, cracks, fissures, and deteriorating rings and seals can often affect the fixture's operation. When selecting a new fixture for your home, we suggest choosing one from a major manufacturer.
  • If you suspect a toilet is leaking, start by checking if the tank's water level is overflowing into the overflow pipe, which is the pipe in the middle of the tank with a small tube connected to it.

If water runs into the overflow pipe, adjust the fill valve to stop the flow, keeping it about one inch below the top of the overflow tube or at the water level mark stamped on the side of the tank. Regular maintenance by a plumbing professional is essential to ensure proper operation.

  • If you've lost water pressure in your system, you may need to restore the air cushion in your pipes. First, turn off the water supply at the main valve to do this. Then, open all the taps in your home. After that, turn the main valve back on and close each tap individually, which should resolve the issue.
  • First, attempt using a plunger. Next, try a liquid drain opener, but follow the instructions carefully. Next, remove the trap and clear any debris.

Be cautious when using liquid drain openers, as some may get trapped. If the clog is beyond the trap, drain augers can extend from about 15 to approximately 50 feet.

Reliable enzyme-based drain openers are available for more stubborn clogs or buildup in pipes. These are similar to the types used at Wide Plumbing, and we effectively dissolve buildup in pipes, particularly in older homes.
